Vegan Breakfast In Berlin: 3 Of The Best Frühstücken Spots

tropical granola acai bowl

The Berlin food scene is on another level. Supposedly the cheapest capital city in the whole of Europe, it really does have it all. From exceptional quality food at affordable prices to a plethora of choice for vegans and meat eaters alike. It truly is foodie heaven.

I had some wonderful vegan frühstücken, otherwise known as ‘breakfast’ so I wanted to share my top 3 places for a vegan breakfast in Berlin.

Berlin is big on coffee culture; there are plenty of coffee shops all over the city, but we found that not all of them serve breakfast, hot food, or even more than just pastries.

There were so many great eateries we wanted to try, but we could only eat so much in the time we had in the city and annoyingly, a lot of places were closed on Sundays and Mondays!

We had some incredible meals, so I thought I’d kick things off with my top 3 places for a vegan breakfast in Berlin. Here are my top picks..

My favourite vegan breakfast in Berlin

Silo Coffee

vegan breakfast, avocado toast with roast aubergine, salad, pomegranate, roast potatoes and truffle mushrooms

Voted the best brunch in Berlin for a number of years running, we knew we couldn’t miss out on this – and it certainly didn’t disappoint!

Our journey there was a bit of a nightmare, having got on the wrong bus, then missing the last bus, waiting for a taxi and then over an hour’s wait for a table once we arrived. However, it was all worth it for the incredible offerings on the menu.

I ordered the avocado toast with truffle mushrooms and za’atar roast potatoes. This was unlike any other avo toast I’ve ever had; smashed avocado, roasted aubergine, tahini, pomegranate, goats cheese (optional, if you are vegan), pickled onion, velerianella locusta, date soy reduction, mint and dukkah on sourdough. Sounds heavenly, right?

My only criticism would be that the bread was sliced far too thick. It wasn’t the tastiest sourdough and the thick cut made it very difficult to cut into, while also giving me anxiety about chipping a tooth every time I bit into it. Aside from that minor detail, it was glorious!

The others ordered the ‘Dirty Beans’; white beans baked in sugo, jerk vegetables, pecorino, pickled onions, coriander & mint on sourdough and the ‘Truffle mushrooms and eggs on toast’ – and were equally as impressed with their choices.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the coffee here since they use third wave coffee, but more on that later..

However, if you’re looking for a great vegan breakfast in Berlin, this is the place to be!

The Visit Coffee Roastery

It’s a close call between this and Silo Coffee for me; it’s hard to compare as they are two very different menus, but both were wonderful. We had breakfast at The Visit Nürnberger Straße branch twice as it was the closest to our hotel and we all loved it. The service here was really great too.

My cousin and I both ordered the avocado & hummus toast which was served with a lovely salad containing lavender – not only beautifully presented, but it tasted delicious too. This was my favourite dish on the menu.

We also had the ‘fried hummus bagel & tomatoes’ which thankfully isn’t fried as the name might suggest. It was served with grilled Mediterranean veg and I had some grilled halloumi on it too. A lovely light breakfast.

Between us, we also tried the tropical granola bowl, pistachio cornetto (croissant), carbon cornetto (vegan charcoal croissant), salted caramel tarte, pain aux chocolat and various smoothies. It was all delicious! Can you tell we spent a lot of time here?

We also worked our way through the coffee menu, and I have to say that the coffee here was the best I had in Berlin. It was here that I discovered a new found love of a double espresso macchiato with oat milk – just what I needed for all those early starts *drools*

They have numerous branches all over the city, but it isn’t obvious from their website if all of those serve food, or whether it’s drinks only. It’s worth locating an eatery branch too as the food is simply too good to miss – I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

Blend Bar At The Pullman Berlin Schweizerhof

We stayed at the Pullman Hotel Schweizerhof and though breakfast wasn’t included as part of our room rate, we opted to pay for it one morning. I must admit that European breakfasts don’t usually cut it for me. I’m more of a beans on toast kinda girl, but the offerings here were surprisingly impressive.

At €24 per person, the cost of the breakfast buffet was a bit steep, but unsurprising for a 5 star establishment I guess. The variety on offer justified the price for me; some of which included an omelette station, baked beans (top tier breakfast item in my opinion), roast potatoes, currywurst (sadly not vegetarian), antipasti, hummus, salads, lactose free and vegan yogurt.

Along with the usual offerings of cereal, fruit, cold cuts, cheese and more bread than I can name – the highlights of this breakfast for me were the vegan cold cuts and vegan cheese. Vegan cheese and I are not friends, so I won’t go on about how when uncooked, it all tastes like plastic to me, but the cold cuts were delicious. A really nice, unexpected and unusual addition to a continental breakfast and I was there for it!

Breakfast buffet chopped fruits are notoriously a boring trifecta of apple, pineapple and melon.. with the occasional grape thrown in for good measure. Here, there was a lot more variety, including physalis and a berry coulis.

Our only gripe was that there is no toaster available, so we were essentially eating beans on bread, ha! The coffee wasn’t amazing either, but then again, is it ever at a hotel breakfast? Overall, this was a great breakfast which justified the price tag, in my opinion.

When it comes to vegan breakfast in Berlin, these three will certainly not disappoint.

Coffee Shops To Avoid In Berlin

Cafe Minoushe

If you stay at The Pullman, don’t be tempted to grab a bite to eat at Cafe Minoushe, across the road. With weak coffee and pale, dry pastries it’s definitely one to avoid.

Third Wave Coffee

Coffee connoisseurs will tell you you must try third wave coffee when in Berlin. I’m not sure what first or second wave coffee is, but I do know that third wave coffee isn’t for me. We first tried it at Silo Coffee and weren’t overly impressed as it was far too weak for our liking.

Determined to give it another shot – see what I did there? we had another cup at Concierge Coffee in Kreutzberg; a really cute hole in the wall in an über hipster neighbourhood, but once again, it was too weak for us and had funny aftertaste.
