Now I don’t know about you, but one of the things that I would love to have is healthier, whiter looking teeth. Particularly in a society where selfies and social media are pretty much a daily occurrence; we all want a gleaming bright smile!
While we all know that dental hygiene is essential, we often fall into a routine of using the same products over and over again. I’m certainly guilty of doing this! However, new and improved products are regularly being released with better research and evidence of effectiveness. Therefore, it’s so important to do your research and look into changing your routine every few months.
If you’re also looking for the same, here are my three tips on making that smile shine brighter..
1. Limit your sugar, caffeine & red wine intake
Cutting out on sugar entirely is not necessary (unless you’d like to). However, a simple reduction in sugar intake will ensure your teeth remain healthy and have less exposure to damage and rot. This way, you’re less likely to cause additional damage to your teeth.
Sugar isn’t just found in junk food, look out for fruit juices too. They’re highly acidic and can ruin the enamel on your teeth. Fizzy drinks, coffee and red wine also contribute towards discolouration which can affect your teeth and smile.
My top tip would be to use a straw where you can; with fizzy drinks, coffee, and even red wine if you fancy it!
2. Use a deep cleaning toothpaste
I’ve started to switch up my toothpaste and recently I’ve been using the Colgate Total Deep Clean. It has an antibacterial system that fights plaque and tartar. It also has an active cleaning formula with polishing micro-particles: so it not only fights plaque between teeth and in all those hard to reach spaces; but also fights bacteria on your tongue, cheeks, and gums for up to 12 hours.
Although no toothpaste will obviously make up for a visit to the dentist (unfortunately), this one leaves my teeth feeling like I have had professional teeth clean! The polishing micro-particles foams up really nicely and I particularly love that the minty taste isn’t overpowering. Often, I find some minty toothpastes can be a bit strong for me but this one leaves my mouth feeling fresh and clean all day.
3. Invest in a good toothbrush
It’s vital to have a good toothbrush to ensure effective brushing, particularly when combined with a great toothpaste. I much prefer using an electric toothbrush with a rotating head, in comparison to a manual one.
One of the things that really helped improve the whiteness of my teeth was finding myself a good toothbrush. I used to keep my electric toothbrush at home and travel with either a manual one or a non-oscillating, battery operated manual one. I found it easier to pack in my travel toiletry bag but as I travel frequently, I really noticed the difference in how unhealthy my teeth looked and felt while travelling for long periods of time.
There are plenty of electric toothbrushes available on the market to suit all budgets, but I would always opt for one with a rotating head. It does all the hard work for you and more, because the oscillating movement means the bristles can get into hard to reach places, including deep cleaning your gums.
