It’s no secret that I have a complete love/hate relationship with my hair.. Ok so it’s mostly hate, but I do like my curls when they decide to play ball – ‘love’ might be stretching it a bit too far tbh.
It’s not often I try new hair products, generally because nothing new ever really works for me, and if it does, I often consider it too pricey to keep repurchasing considering how much hair I have. Also, because of the way I feel about my hair, I generally just think ‘if it ain’t broke, then why fix it’?
So because of this, you may be surprised to hear there are a few new products and tools that I’ve been loving recently.
Big Sexy Hair Weather Proof Humidity Resistant Spray | £16.95
If I had to pick just one word I associate with my hair, it would be ‘frizz’ and so I was blown away (no pun intended) with this spray.
I’m sure you’ve heard me moaning about the humidity and heatwave we’re having this summer all over Instagram recently, and this spray has honestly been a lifesaver. This isn’t like a regular hairspray; it doesn’t help to style or hold the hair – it just leaves a beautiful soft, shiny finish and most importantly, actually tames frizz!
Not gonna lie though, you will want to wash/brush this out the next day as you can really feel it in the hair, but for somebody with curly hair, this isn’t a problem as I have to wash my hair every day in order to get the curls to sit right anyway.
Big Sexy Hair Spray & Play Volumizing Hairspray | £14.95
As I’m sure you can imagine, my curls are difficult to brush at the best times so I tend to avoid hairspray if I can, just because it makes it impossible to brush through them. However, the weight of my hair pulls my curls down, making it look straight at the roots and completely limp, so I’m always willing to try out different volumising products.
I do love a lot of volume when I go out out, but I find that many hairsprays leave my hair feeling extremely crispy and sticky or they leave a slight grey/white cast which isn’t attractive. I’m really impressed with this Spray & Play though; it actually holds the volume/backcombing in place all night and adds a beautiful shine to my hair.
Again, this is something you’ll definitely want to wash out the following day. The brushing process is no different for me with this one – it’s still a bit of a chore, but I tend to shampoo it out and brush my hair while it’s still wet to get rid of any residue. The main thing I love about this is the super strong hold which doesn’t diminish under humidity – that’s quite a big deal for me as I only use this spray for that extra oomph of volume on nights out.
Design.ME Puff.ME Volumising Powder Mist | £9.95
Speaking of volumising products, I’ve also been trying this powder out. It’s ok and does the job reasonably well, but I’m really not a fan of the packaging. The pump releases too much product, which, if you’re not careful can get in your eyes and over your face – I’ve definitely done this a few times!
I’m sure that it’d be fine with straight hair, but once my hair is styled, I would never run a brush through it (that would ruin the curls) and so I find it quite hard to comb the product through with my fingers. Like I said, it does the job reasonably well and I’ll continue using it, I just probably wouldn’t repurchase it.
Design.ME Fab.ME Hair Moisturising Mist | £14.95
This leave in treatment is a hybrid between a detangling mist, frizz control, heat and UV protection, hydration, strengthen and a lightweight conditioner! The formula is quite thick which I imagine would increase blow drying time – I haven’t tested this as I refuse to go anywhere near a hairdryer when it’s this hot and humid outside.
It’s hard to tell if it does all it claims to do after just a few uses, but I do find that it helps detangle and condition my hair when used a couple of times a week. Don’t make the same mistake I did and use too much as it can leave your hair feeling quite crispy. It smells incredible; a bit like summer without being overpowering, and the scent does linger on your hair which is an added bonus.
Manta Hairbrush | £25
I went to a press day last week, where numerous brands and PR’s were all exhibiting under one roof. As I walked past one stand, this lady called me over while waving this hairbrush at me. I rolled my eyes (in my head, obvs), thinking there’s nothing you can say that’ll convince me this brush is better than the other 347 brushes I’ve tried.
Oh how wrong I was!
This revolutionary new hair brush is made with one single piece of flexible silicone (others have two) which means that it moulds to the shape of your hand & scalp, creating less tension on each strand of hair. Also, it’s patented Flexguard engineering enables each bristle to have complete 360 degree motion to gently loosen knots and keep the process snag-free. It’s very clever stuff.
I can’t quite believe it; it honestly doesn’t snag, tug or make me cry as it glides effortlessly through my super thick, frizzy, curly hair! What a game changer!
As someone who only brushes their hair when it is wet and usually only every 3 or 4 days due to how painful is it, I’m sure I’ll be making this a more regular occurrence now. What I also love is how the soft touch bristles gently massage my scalp – not in a scratchy way, but in a really blissfully relaxing way. I close my eyes. Every time. It’s that dreamy.
It goes without saying that I still use my holy grail curl creme with and without all of these products. It’s the only product that actually defines and holds my curls, while somewhat taming the frizz and costs less than £2!
Have you tried any of these products? Do you have curly hair? What are your tried and tested holy grail hair products?
