It’s not very often that I receive an email so exciting that I literally squeal at my inbox with joy (and disbelief), but this is exactly what happened when I got an invite to the Disney & MAC Cosmetics masterclass about a month ago.
MAC are the official makeup artists for all the Disney West End shows and they’ve created some of the most iconic Disney character looks for years. We had the privilege of seeing how some of these looks are created, and also how these can be adapted to everyday, wearable looks.
If you saw my vlog, you will have seen that the makeup masterclass was held on stage at the Prince Edward Theatre, led by four of MAC’s Senior Artists and alongside four other makeup artists from both Aladdin and The Lion King.
It was an amazing experience to watch the artists at work; the amount of skill and precision that goes into bringing these characters to life is incredible and often, they only have 20 minutes to complete the look!
With soft purple and gold eyeshadow and a glossy, bold lip, Princess Jasmine’s look was subtle but beautifully natural.
PRINCESS JASMINE INSPIRED LOOK
This was my favourite Jasmine look; absolutely gorgeous and the camera doesn’t do it justice. The makeup artist used a Paint Pot in Rubenesque, Amber Lights eyeshadow and Reflects Gold Glitter lightly pressed onto it for added sparkle. The lip colour is MAC Party Line with vaseline dabbed over it to create a subtle rosy pink natural lip colour. Gorgeous!
It will come as no surprise to hear that Trevor, who plays the Genie stole the show – he was absolutely incredible!!
He has two looks for the show; starting with a simple look in his first appearance before showcasing this incredible strong brow (inspired by ancient hieroglyphics) and a showering of gold glitter in the first scene where he meets Aladdin. – Watching the makeup artist dust this all over him was wonderful!
Trevor told us that he wakes up covered in glitter on a daily basis, his iPad has a film of glitter over it and he takes showers between the show to wash it all off.. I’m not surprised!
GENIE INSPIRED LOOK
Super creative and fun Genie inspired look, but I’m not sure that this is what I would call wearable. The big lashes and blue lips are gorgeous, but I would maybe recreate the bright pink and yellow eyeshadow with a different lip. What do you think? Should I attempt to recreate this look on my channel?
I loved the fabulous glittery lower lash line; this was achieved by using lash glue and glitter over the top to ensure it lasts longer – Now that’s something I will definitely be incorporating into a glam look!
THE LION KING
If you’ve been a long time subscriber or have seen my Halloween makeup tutorials, you’ll know how much I adore experimenting with alternative makeup, SFX and unwearable looks. Though I didn’t watch The Lion King on the day, I’m so pleased that I got to see the incredible transformations that took place; this was the highlight for me.
The makeup for The Lion King characters takes influences from African tribes, earthy tones and the kind of makeup they would wear for a special occasion. This tribal influence is incorporated with the colours of the characters from the Disney animation.
This was the highlight for me – I was watching in awe as the MUA perfected the circles above the brows and saw the tools and technique she used for the feather-like strokes on the cheeks. It’s something that I would love to incorporate into one of my SFX/Halloween looks.
RAFIKI INSPIRED LOOK
This is such a stunning makeup look that complements this lady’s skin tone and face shape perfectly. It’s one that is completely wearable and I’d love to try it out.
NALA INSPIRED LOOK
Again, another wearable look that complements this lady’s skin tone. The orange tones are bang on trend at the moment and the white dots add a subtle pop to the inner and outer corners of the eye.
Once the masterclass ended, there was a spot of mingling over refreshments in the theatre bar, before we headed over to Polpo to meet our plus ones for brunch. With the Prosecco flowing and approximately a million courses (not a huge exaggeration), we were well and truly stuffed before watching our show of choice – Aladdin!
The entire day was amazing.. Seeing the artists in action was an incredible experience, but don’t just take my word for it – I vlogged the whole day as you need to see the amazing skills these artists have.
