Not only do I love to look at what’s in season in the plus size fashion world every year, but as I’ve got older I’ve gained a true love for home decor. It started with Instagram: seeing those carefully orchestrated photographs taken in white rooms which boasted symmetry and style opened my eyes to the joy of great home decor, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I feel like home decor is so important because your environment can have such an impact on your mental health, so surrounding yourself with your own style and comfort is the best way to make yourself feel good on a daily basis. Here are some of my favourite home decor trends for 2019.
The Memphis Design
The ‘90s’ in me is squealing with joy, because the Memphis design is back, as bold as ever, and making a cameo across so many homes. I’ve seen cushion covers, curtains, and even shelving with the Memphis design bringing life into a room, and it truly fills me with joy and nostalgia to see those bright colours and those bold shapes. I love the opportunities that designers have when using the Memphis design: the potential for striking angles and bold colours makes this design a winner every time.
Light Wood Floors
I think the trend for lighting flooring coincides with the modern need for a home to feel fresh and spacious. A light floor makes your room feel bigger, and a pale wood or even light-coloured lino or vinyl flooring is a definite mood booster as you feel like you’re walking on air. Somehow your space just feels more clean when it is light and lovely. Pair light flooring with a solid, bold wall colour – a moody green or blue would be totally on trend.
Four Poster Beds
Yet again I am transported back to my youth, and I reminded of my ultimate princess fantasy that I was never able to have as a child. I love the idea of a four poster bed: its cosy, it looks fancy as heck and it just feels that little bit special. The beams are a great excuse to get decorate with fairy lights and flowers – but, of course, be careful with those fairy lights around bedding and curtains.
Black Marble
I’ll always be a little bit goth at heart, so when I see a black marble bathroom my heart just feels happy. I love seeing black marble with tiny flecks of gold glitter throughout; it feels decadent and luxurious, yet oozing with style and individuality.
Tiny Colour Pops
The final trend I am totally on board with this year is the tiny colour pops trend. As with the pale flooring, a white room can feel spacious and like a breath of fresh air to come home to. Throw in small elements of bold and beautiful colour, and it becomes unique.
