I have tried, and failed at making mulled wine many times in the past, and have even resorted to those awful ‘teabag’ sachets that you throw into the pan. Admittedly, they’re not as bad as the ready-made, bottled mulled wine but there is really no need to opt for the convenience option when it’s so easy to make yourself.
I have finally perfected the recipe which tastes like ‘Christmas in a glass’ and I thought I would share it with you today.
It goes without saying that you can adjust the quantities of the sugar and spices to suit you and swap the wine for Shloer as a non-alcoholic option! I make this for friends and family that don’t drink and it tastes just as good and it means that they don’t feel left out of the celebrations!
The ingredients you need are:
1 bottle of Italian red wine (preferably Chianti)
150g Caster Sugar
1 Stick of cinnamon
3 Bay leaves
1 Vanilla pod
2 Star anise
You can use the same amount of spices for up to two bottles of wine, just adding an extra 50g caster sugar.
Watch the video below on how I make this.
-Basically, I throw everything into a pan, bring it to the boil to create a syrup, add the wine and warm it through!
