How To Pack An Underseat Bag For A Short Trip

I know we all love to hate Ryanair, but with return flights to Dublin for £30 during the peak summer season, I certainly wasn’t going to turn my nose up at that! Of course I then had to figure out how to pack all my stuff into an underseat bag!

If you’re a frequent traveller you’re probably already aware of the new Ryanair baggage restrictions that were introduced back in November 2018. *rolls eyes*

Essentially, it means that the only bag included in the price of your ticket is a small bag which has to fit under the seat in front of you – you have to pay extra for larger cabin bags or checked luggage. This can be a bag of any description as long as it fits within the size guidelines on their site.

I was determined to see if I could get away with travelling as light as possible without paying any more – a first for me, so here’s my advice on how to pack an underseat bag.

Admittedly, a rucksack would have been ideal so that I can carry it on my back and have my hands free, but once I’d laid out all my clothes, shoes and toiletries to pack, I realised that all the extra compartments take up far too much room, it was too rigid and so I wouldn’t have been able to squeeze everything in.

This holdall (which was a free gift with purchase when Jass bought some aftershave) fit the guidelines perfectly. It has no internal pockets which meant no wasted space so I was able to pack more into it and it’s relatively easy to squash down, should they have measured my bag (which they rarely do!)

It was a bit of a faff having to carry it around the airport because it was heavy and bulky, but I got lucky and managed to put it up in the overhead compartment on the flight, both ways which meant that I could stretch my legs and not try to squash it down under the seat in front of me – I’m pretty sure it was too full for that anyway, oops!

I swear by packing cubes when I travel with checked luggage, however I found that they take up too much space when space is already limited for an underseat bag.

I packed the same way for my 3 Day Northern Ireland Road Trip To The Giants Causeway too, taking just an under seat carry on!

What I Packed For 2 Nights In Dublin

I personally don’t find it difficult to pack clothing & shoes, particularly in the summer when there’s no need to bulky layers. There was a heatwave forecasted while we were away, so for 2 nights, I packed:

  • Pajamas
  • 3 sets of underwear (one spare as we had an early flight)
  • 3 pairs of socks (one spare)
  • 1 swimsuit as our hotel had a pool.
  • 1 jumpsuit as its just one item of clothing for an entire look.
  • 1 dress for the same reason.
  • 1 skirt.
  • 1 t-shirt.
  • 1 pair of sandals.
  • 1 handbag.

I wore my my trainers to travel in as they’re the heaviest, and I risked it without a thin jacket or jumper as I knew I wouldn’t need them – and thankfully I didn’t!

I didn’t need to pack any travel adaptor plugs, but the other miscellaneous bits I needed were:

  • Passport
  • Wallet
  • Sunglasses
  • Phone charger
  • Camera, camera charger, spare battery & mini tripod
  • Powerbank
  • Headphones for the flight (I just took my small iPhone ones)
  • Tote bag

The hardest part for me, always, is packing all of my skincare and makeup, as I’m a beauty junkie and always wear a full face of make-up on a daily basis. I hate overpacking and aim to pack just the bare minimum so I can ensure I use every single item I’ve packed.

The toiletries I packed for 2 nights away:

I just about managed to cram all my liquids into a clear plastic bag, which I kept at the top of the holdall for easy access when going through security. These are my essentials that I took away with me:

The only thing I missed having was some micellar water or eye-makeup remover so that I could remove my makeup properly before cleansing. It’s just a shame that my deodorant (the only travel sized product I purchased) took up the most space, as did my decanted hair product which I can’t live without!

I could have done without my full sized foundation bottle, but I didn’t have a small pot or have time to visit a counter for a sample before I left – however, I made sure to pick one that was the least full and in the lightest plastic packaging as oppose to a glass bottle.

I put the rest of these items (non-liquids) in a regular toiletry bag, as I didn’t need to take them out at airport security.

Red lipstick is one of my top 10 must-haves when travelling. It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing or how tired you look, just one swipe of red lippie can make you look and feel so glam.

It’s the perfect way to dress up a casual outfit, detract from greasy hair or lack of eye makeup. Lady Danger is a feisty red shade, goes with everything and it even stays put through numerous cocktails!
