New Year’s Eve is almost upon us and if you’re anything like me, you’re probably already thinking about your makeup for the night. While I’m currently soaking up the sun in Thailand with no celebratory plans other than sipping on some champagne, I am aware that some of you may be heading out to party the night away!
Red lips are a holiday must-have for anyone who loves a bold lip and I’ve picked out some of my favourites. Now, if you’re planning to have a few drinks and of course, a cheeky midnight kiss (hey, we’ve all been there!), you’ll want a matte lipstick that takes some elbow grease to remove! Don’t worry, I have you covered with my top 5!
You may need a lip balm to prep your lips as some of these formulas are quite drying on the lips. My balm of choice would be the Dr. Paw Paw red tinted balm. Not only is it a fantastic primer, it conditions your lips and if you don’t think you’re brave enough to rock a bold lip, it has a slight tint to it so it can be worn alone.
As liquid lipsticks are having a bit of a moment, I’ll start with them. The Sephora Cream Lip Stain in 01 Always Red is always at the top of my list! It’s bold, it’s matte, won’t budge and quite frankly you will need plenty of makeup remover to shift it. Perfect!
The same goes for the Stila Stay All Day Liquid lipstick in Fiery which is a close second. Slightly deeper than the Sephora lip stain, this is a gorgeous, blue toned red that looks amazing on everyone! The formula is matte and longevity is amazing. – Perfect for New Year’s Eve!
MAC Ruby Woo is a classic that is not too cool or warm toned and the formula is extremely matte which means that it will still be hanging around hours later. The formula is very drying on the lips, but with a little pre and post-application prep you can guarantee it will stay in place all night.
The Hourglass Indestructible Matte Opaque Rouge in Icon is a slightly deeper shade of red, it applies like a liquid and sets like a stain. I’m not a huge fan of the applicator and it can take a bit of getting used to, however the longevity of this is great. You may need a touch-up through the night, but I can confirm that it survived a big bowl of Vietnamese Pho so it gets a big thumbs up from me!
A drugstore alternative is the Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate lipstick in 01. This is perfect if you’re not a fan of matte lips; it glides on with ease, providing an even, opaque coverage that isn’t too glossy. It isn’t particularly long lasting and does require touch-ups throughout the night. It also has a tendency to bleed and it needs to be paired with a lipliner to prevent this from happening. Nevertheless, it’s incredibly affordable and a beautiful shade of red, especially if you like your lipstick to smell sweet!
I hope this helped to get your red lips ready. Have a great night!
