I recently flew to Billund for the day – what can I say, I’m just a sucker for cheap flights and spontaneous day trips to random European cities. Kiwi and Skyscanner always seem to have cheap flights to Billund, I’m talking under £30 return and after a bit of research, I discovered there isn’t a ton of things to do there aside from LEGOLAND Billund and Lalandia ; a gigantic tropical waterpark. Pretty much only two of the reasons why anyone would visit.

Having been to Copenhagen in Denmark before, I already knew this is an expensive country all round; food, accommodation etc so day trip it was!

I have rounded my top tips for visiting LEGOLAND Billund in Denmark to ensure you have the best time during your visit there.

Top Tips for visiting LEGOLAND Billund

1. A day trip to LEGOLAND Billund is possible

As mentioned above, Denmark is expensive and there isn’t much to do in Billund. With a flight time of just over an hour from London, thankfully a day trip to LEGOLAND Billund is doable. We had great flights departing from London Stanstead at 7am and leaving Billund at 7pm and noticed many of the same people travelling on both flights; most with kids too!

LEGOLAND Billund is conveniently only a 5 minute bus ride from the airport.

Note that there is no Uber in Denmark, which brings me on to my next tip..

2. Take a small amount of Danish Krone/Euros for the bus

I always make the mistake of not carrying cash in Europe and instead relying on my Monzo or Revolut card. We got lucky with the bus driver on the way to LEGOLAND Billund as he ushered us on to the bus without a word when we asked how to purchase a ticket.

Our return journey was not so fortunate with a grumpy driver, who said we can’t buy a ticket on the bus with no further information. Thankfully we met somebody at the bus stop who told us we need to download the Sydtrafik app and purchase tickets in advance, if you don’t have any cash. Bus tickets cost just over £3 each for a single journey.

3. Aim to arrive by 10am

LEGOLAND Billund opens at 10am and without realising it, we’d timed our arrival perfectly. The queues are long to get into it but everything moves really quickly and smoothly there.

Aiming to arrive as soon as it opens, simply means you can make the most of your day.

4. Start backwards through the park

We didn’t do this, but I’d recommend grabbing a map and starting at the far end of the park as most people enter and start going on rides as soon as they see them. This ensures you can make better use of your time spent at LEGOLAND Billund and miss the crowds.

Head for Ninjago land or some of the big rollercoasters if that’s what you’re in to and work your way forwards to avoid some of the crowds.

5. Don’t try and fit everything into one day

LEGOLAND Billund is huge; much bigger than it looks as you first enter. It’s likely you won’t see it all in one day and that’s okay if you’re visiting for a spontaneous day out.

Serious LEGO lovers however, might feel differently about that, and so of course, you have the option to buy a multi day or yearly pass and even stay on site at Hotel LEGOLAND.

6. Take your own lunch with you

It is no secret that Denmark is expensive and if, like me, you’re not a fan of fast food or are (mostly) vegan, you mights struggle.

We had the foresight to grab a sandwich from Pret at the airport and let me tell you that marked up airport sandwiches are still cheaper than purchasing a burger at LEGOLAND Billund. There were a number of vegan and vegetarian food options available which is always great to see, however it’s important to note that not all of the food outlets were open on the day we visited.

The two that were open, understandably had very long queues; a burger place and buffet restaurant.

7. Make use of the picnic tables

I noticed that most of the people visiting had brought their own food to LEGOLAND Billund, with many carrying huge cool boxes into the park. Conveniently, there are picnic tables and benches dotted around all over the park which makes it easy to consume your own food.

8. Pay for a locker to store your belongings

Nobody wants to be schlepping all their belongings around a theme park with them all day and LEGOLAND Billund have a range of lockers available to rent for the day. We paid around £7 for a small locker to share as we’d obviously travelled light. There are larger lockers available too.

So that you don’t do what we did and waste time queuing at the information office, the lockers are self-service. They are located on the right, just as you enter the park and it isn’t immediately obvious where they are. All you need to do is pay with a credit or debit card and pick a locker.

9. Don’t assume there are water stations to refill your bottles

We were surprised to find there is nowhere to refill water bottles throughout the park, so it meant having to pay for bottled water which isn’t ideal from both an environmental and cost perspective. Had we known that in advance, we would have refilled ours at the airport before leaving.

10. Don’t buy skip the line tickets

We visited LEGOLAND Billund on a Saturday, though it’s important to note we went at the end of September – I assume it’s busier there in summer. We noticed that there was absolutely no need for skip the line tickets. In fact, it seemed as though nobody else had purchased them either and the lanes for fast track entry were closed.

Throughout the day we noticed that though there were queues everywhere, it all moved very fast and there was no hanging around for long periods of time which was very pleasant.

This was not only my first time at any LEGOLAND resort, but also my first time visiting a theme park in many years! I’m not a thrill seeker when it comes to rollercoasters (as evidenced by my face above) – I would literally rather be anywhere else.

Despite that, it was such a great day out and I now have a newfound appreciation for LEGO!
